Malia Koa means Mary the Warrior. Its quieter kaona, or hidden meaning, is the Peaceful Warrior.

Our designs seek to honor the strength, beauty, and steadfastness of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Lightweight nylon cord is paired with hand-set hardwood and stone beads, and every bead is set between its own knots. This is a time-consuming construction style, but the result is a beautiful rosary that is a joy to pray with!

Malia O Ka Malu

Our Lady of Peace, Malia o ka Malu, is also known as Maria Lanakila: Our Lady, Queen of Victory. St. Alphonsus Liguori wrote that “Mary is Queen not only of Heaven and the saints, but Queen also of hell and the devils, for she has bravely triumphed over them by her virtues.” Never was it known that anyone who fled to her protection or implored her help was left unaided!

The Pardon Crucifix bears the Miraculous Medal, on which Our Lady crushes the serpent underfoot, and the St. Benedict Medal, worn for centuries in defense against the devil. The centerpiece is the ancient Auspice Maria monogram, meaning “Under the Protection of Mary.”

St. Damien of Molokaʻi

Before volunteering to serve the exiles of Molokaʻi, Damien had spent years on the Big Island covering a massive rural district: trekking lava fields, climbing ravines, going wherever his people needed him. At the “leper colonies” of Kalawao and Kalaupapa, the only land access was a 2,000-foot cliff trail. This great saint carried the gospel to the ends of the earth!

“If Providence sees fit to afflict me while I am working among the lepers,” Damien wrote, “whether I am worthy or not I shall gain a crown of thorns.” This rosary honors both his enduring strength and his willingness to partake in the suffering of our Lord, even unto death.

St. Marianne Cope

When Hawaiʻi’s government asked for help caring for leprosy patients on Molokaʻi, over fifty religious orders said no. Mother Marianne said yes, writing that she was hungry for the work and wished with all her heart to be chosen for it. She nursed Damien in his final illness and took over his work after his death. She then remained on Molokaʻi for the last thirty years of her life.

As a member of the Franciscan Order, she lived out the same call that St. Francis heard while praying at the Cross of San Damiano: to serve Christ’s church one soul at a time. This rosary honors her legacy: steady and faithful through a lifetime of obedience.

Testimony

Malia Koa Rosaries was born out of gratitude to our Blessed Mother for a real deliverance. In a time of great struggle, I turned to the Rosary and asked Our Lady for help. Since then, my life has been changed in a miraculous way because of this devotion! I want to carry that grace forward by making beautiful and long-lasting rosaries that honor the Saints of Hawaiʻi along with Mary, Queen of Peace.

As a Native Hawaiian and a Catholic, I know firsthand that devotion to the Most Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary can bless and heal the souls of our people, kanaka and kamaʻāina alike. This is my small offering toward that hope for Hawaiʻi. These rosaries are not merely decorations, but are made to be prayed.
